Medicare Telephone Scam
The Simsbury Police have recently become aware of a telephone scam targeting our elderly
community.
Recent news and discussion about possible changes in Medicare drug benefits has sparked
a nationwide increase in phone calls where opportunistic scammers try to convince the
elderly to divulge personal information regarding their Medicare account.
A number of Simsbury residents have reported receiving these types of phone calls. In cases
that have been reported thus far, a male caller, often with a foreign accent, has asked for
personal Medicare information and bank account information. Residents with caller
identification have reported that a phone number may appear, but this number is unable to be
dialed back or traced.
The Simsbury Police wish to remind our residents to never provide personal information over
the phone, especially from an unsolicited caller. If a suspicious phone call is received, hang
up immediately. Additionally, Medicare will never call to ask for sensitive personal financial
information.
