Public Notification regarding recent larcenies from Tariffville area

The Simsbury Police Department has received three formal complaints of larcenies (thefts) and
one informal complaint of a larceny in the past month. This is not an unusually high number of
thefts given the time of year and the economy. So far the items taken include a push lawn
mower, a riding tractor, a rent check and the seat off of a riding lawn mower. None of the items
were locked in a building. I will be investigating the thefts where the complainants wish to have
the person responsible arrested. It has been requested by Wanda Colman that this department
offer some ideas to assist folks in safeguarding their belongings. The below list is certainly not a
conclusive list but offers some good suggestions:
1. Store all valuable items in a locked garage or shed out of public view.
2. Use a chain or cable lock to secure those things unable to be garaged.
3. Trim back trees and bushes, (thieves like to hide behind these).
4. Use outdoor lighting at night keeping them on all night or use motion sensors or timers.
5. Keep indoor and outdoor lights on timers at your home while away on vacation.
6. Lock your vehicles and do not keep anything valuable in them over night.
7. Be aware of your surroundings, unusual activity, persons and vehicles.
8. Notify the town or state if street lights are not functioning.
9. Communicate with your neighbors.
10. Report all thefts to the police immediately.
The more light you can shine in your yard at night the better, criminals will avoid the lighted
areas so as to go unnoticed. When observing suspicious activity, pay attention to the description
of the people and vehicles involved. If possible write down license plates of suspicious vehicles.
The Simsbury Police Department will increase patrols in the Tariffville Village area.
