First Selectman’s Report August 11, 2025 Patrick Fallon Thank-you Stafion Manager Patrick Fallon has left SCM for a new posifion in the New Haven area after 6 years at SCM. He saw our community television station through the latest upgrades, helped with all our town meetings, candidate videos, town programming, and was just a nice person to talk to. We will all miss him and wish him luck in his new career! Vietnam and Korean Veterans Event On Monday, August 18th, LG Susan Bysiewicz will host an event for Vietnam and Korean veterans living in Simsbury. She has organized similar events in many communities across the state. This event is to thank those who served, as well as their families. If you are a veteran from those wars or related to one, we invite you to attend. Town and state elected officials have been invited to join. Thanks to Franklyn Barrueco, the TM’s office, the American Legion, VFW, and DAR for helping make this event possible. I also want to thank the Simsbury Police Department, Henry James Middle School staff, and the Public Works Maintenance team for their support. Suicide Prevention Month in September and Honor Conor Events The Board of Selectmen issued a proclamation to raise awareness for Suicide Prevention Month in September. We have also been asked to inform the public about Honor Connor’s September plans for the following event: Hope LIVE – a free, clinically backed educational support group for suicide loss survivors – hosted at the Simsbury Public Library on Thursday, Sept. 4, from 6 to 8PM. It is open to anyone affected by suicide or interested in learning how to support others. Additionally, there will be pop-up events at local spots around town to share resources and engage with the community. No Thru Trucks Per Board of Selectmen (maybe) The Board of Selectmen has approved instructing the Town Manager to seek approval for installing signs on Route 315/Elm Street through the center of Tariffville, all the way to Hopmeadow Street. The signs will indicate that NO THRU TRUCKS are allowed per BOS. Approval from the State Department of Transportation is needed, so there is still a way to go before this happens. Nafional Registry for Meadowood On Monday night, the Board of Selectmen unanimously approved having the town complete the nominafion process for Meadowood's lisfing on the Nafional Register of Historic Places. Below is the lefter confirming the request, which contains background on what this means to the town. By doing this now, they will waive the $20,000 applicafion fee and, if nominated, open us up to grants. Town Seal Updates The Board of Selectmen voted to update the town seal with a higher-resolution version and added color to represent its elements. The new colors differ from the current blue and green on the official town pins that the BOS wears, matching the reflective colors below. We displayed them during the meeting to showcase the updates! The next step is for our Town Clerk, Trish Munroe, to file this change with our Secretary of the State, Stephanie Thomas. Dog Ordinance In Progress For all those following this hot news story (WFSB, FOX 61, The Patch, CT-Insider) about dog poop in Simsbury, the BOS did not vote on the ordinance on Monday night. We have received a lot of public input and plan to step back, review the comments, and improve the ordinance based on your feedback. Internafional Movement Manases, Inc Approval for Tax Waiver The Board of Selectmen approved this request at our June meefing. Marc provided OPM with the necessary paperwork and proof needed to have these taxes abated due to their 501c3 status. OPM approved. USA Waste Update The Town met with USA to share residents' and businesses' concerns and will continue to meet biannually with their senior management team to ensure a smooth transition. USA acquired Paines, Inc. in December 2024 and All Waste. We recognize the importance of good communication, not only between USA Waste and its Simsbury customers but also broadly with the public and community at large. USA Waste is working to modernize its vehicle fleet and technology, seeking efficiencies to manage rising costs. The plan is for the TM and team to stay informed about the work USA Waste is doing for the town as a customer and for both commercial and residential customers. Here is their website and contact information: https://www.usarecycle.com and 860-746-3200. The bear locks are also available as a deterrent, but at an extra cost of $12 per month. Currently, about 15% of residents are using them. Summer is almost over! It’s hard to believe that summer will be over and school will start in 2 weeks. Enjoy these last couple of weeks and try to keep cool! I’d also like to congratulate those who have volunteered to run for elected office this November. Simsbury is lucky to have many residents willing to dedicate their fime to making our town government work for the community.
