Community & Social Services: On February 13th, we celebrated the grand opening of our new Food Pantry location at Simsbury First Church with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The ceremony was well attended and it was a pleasure to reveal our wonderful new space. On Tuesday, the 18th, our first distribution was held in the new space. All went exceedingly well and we had overwhelmingly good feedback from our participants and volunteers. Thank you to all involved that helped make this move possible! (Pictured from left to right: First Selectman Wendy Mackstutis, Selectwoman Diana Yeisley, Me, Social Services Director Kristen Formanek, Community Social Worker Rachael Loveland) Our Elderly Outreach Worker, Ann Marie Grella, has become a certified Matter of Balance instructor. She has just completed co-leading her first course where 13 residents participated, learning about, and improving, balance and muscle strength, as well as, what to do if a fall occurs. This program works well with our STEPS to Safety program which continues to provide residents with free residential safety assessments around fall and fire safety. Social Services also continues to hold events for our seniors and youth. A line dancing class was held where 44 participants danced with our special guests, members of the Police Department, including Clifton! On Wednesday, March 12th we will be hosting an Intergenerational Dance Class! Free and no experience is necessary, please call (860) 658-3283 to register. The AARP Tax-Aide program is well underway and the Senior Center has made nearly 300 tax preparation appointments. Public Works: Award applications for our Old Drake Hill Flower Bridge (ODHFB) project, as well as, Public Works Director Tom Roy for ‘Top Ten Leaders of the Year’ have been submitted to the American Public Works Association (APWA). Fingers crossed! Also, mark your calendars, our annual Touch-A-Truck & Public Works Campus Open House is scheduled for May 10th. We hope to see you there! Director Roy is going to be a presenter next week at the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) training session with the UConn Engineering Connecticut Transportation Institute. Join us for the 2nd annual Human Library, on Saturday, March 22nd from 10 AM to 2 PM, organized and hosted by our Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Council and Human Library Organization.
